Choral Concert with host Peter Togni, March 27, 2011 9:00 - 11:00 am, (9:30 - 11:30 NL) on CBC Radio 2

Les Voix Baroque and Skye Consort present “Love, Death and the Lady”

This Sunday on Choral Concert Peter Togni brings you a concert from the Ottawa Chamber Music Festival called “Love, Death and the Lady”.  Back in the 16th century it was popular for the male poets and artists of the time to link the feminine with death. A strange association to our modern minds, but the justification of the time was that it encouraged more virtue. Nevertheless it certainly inspired some beautiful music, and you will hear everything from John Dowland to Orlando de Lassus in a collection of absolutely stunning performances.

You will also hear a truly glorious collection of new choral works from the Polish film composer Zbigniew Preisner.

Choral Concert with host Peter Togni, March 20, 2011 9:00 - 11:00 am, (9:30 - 11:30 NL) on CBC Radio 2

I Coristi perform “Borealis”

On Choral Concert this week Peter Togni celebrates the first day of spring with a program that runs hot and cold. It’s a confused time of year in most parts of our country; we get cold days then warm days, gloomy days then sunny days… so Choral Concert will bring it all together for you in a concert that first delves into things cold and northern, but then goes towards warmth, sun and southern heat.

You’ll hear the Edmonton based choir “I Coristi” perform music from Denmark, Finland, Iceland and Sweden in a concert they call “Borealis”, in celebration of the northern lights. But you will also hear music from lands bathed in sun; South Africa, the south of France, and Italy.

You can listen to the “Borealis” on Concerts on Demand at: http://www.cbc.ca/radio2/cod/concerts/20110212coris

International Francophone Choir Festival in Edmonton July 7th—15th, 2012

Choralies internationales 2012, planned for July of 2012 in Edmonton, will be a musical and cultural event of international calibre. With more than a 1000 choristers coming from France, Belgium, Switzerland, Germany, the Congo, Martinique, South America, the US, Quebec and from across Canada, this festival will be one of the largest cultural gatherings in the history of Western Canada. These major international festivals are almost always held in Europe and very rarely in Canada. In 2012, it will be Edmonton's turn to host the world. The festival's theme “Toi, moi, tout un monde!” [You, Me, Quite a World!],  based on the piece of the same name by Edmonton composer France Levasseur-Ouimet, aptly states the very inclusive, multicultural nature of this event.

Choral Concert with host Peter Togni, March 13, 2011 9:00 - 11:00 am, (9:30 - 11:30 NL) on CBC Radio 2

A show about giving it up

On Choral Concert this week Peter Togni brings you a show about giving it up, or giving up something you like in order to learn more about who you are. It’s a time of year in the Christian calendar known as Lent, and there has been a LOT of great music over the years written for this time of year.

You’ll hear everything from Haydn’s “Seven last Words of Christ” with the London Philharmonic Orchestra and Choir, through a live concert with Pro Coro Canada doing the music of Dmitri Bortniansky, to a classic performance of Allegri’s famous “Miserere”.

More about giving it up on the Choral Concert blog: http://cbc.ca/choralconcert

Choral Concert with host Peter Togni, March 6, 2011 9:00 - 11:00 am, (9:30 - 11:30 NL) on CBC Radio 2

Mixing it up – where choral meets jazz.

This Sunday on Choral Concert Peter Togni brings you a true blending, or even a collision of cultures. You’ll hear a whole range of releases that combines choral music with classical music’s creative cousin, jazz.

You’ll hear a concert with Concerto Della Donna (conducted by Iwan Edwards) and Montreal based saxophonist Joel Miller with his group Mandala. They’ll be doing pieces by Joel created especially for this event.

Peter will also swing back to the sixties with one of the most successful pop choral groups of all time, the Swingle singers. Plus a bluegrass mass (it works!) and brand new release by the Stuttgart Chamber Choir of the master of crossover himself, the great Brazilian master Heitor Villa-Lobos.
