If you sing in a choir, you already know it is a very cathartic, healthy experience—especially for those who do it just for the love of it.

People have known this for a very long time. Back as far as the 1700’s in England people were really starting to get organized about choral singing and began to create choral societies all across the country. The regular folk loved choral singing and were really interested in finding music that they could practice and perform.

Well, enter George Frideric Handel. During this period he started writing tons of choral music these new groups could sing, and they loved him for it. It became a golden period with many of the most famous choral works coming out of it.

This Sunday on Choral Concert Nick Halley will kick off the show with a great chorus from Handel’s Solomon, and then follow that up with music from the man who inspired both Handel and Bach – Dietrich Buxtehude.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9078819567971234203.post-54186360526923900052014-02-10T14:35:00.001-04:002014-02-10T14:36:41.623-04:00Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod July 8 - 13, 2014

It was the first "copyright" for music, and we owe it to Byrd for being the first to get the intellectual property rights ball rolling.

This week on Choral Concert Nick Halley will bring you lots of music by the great master William Byrd, along with a feast of choral sounds are both sweet and savoury. everything from J.S. Someone who does what you do, but somehow seems to do it so well that they inspire you to push yourself further?

Well, in the world of musicians almost everyone has this competitive muse…and for J.S. Bach perhaps Handel fell into this category. There was a healthy competition going on between these two great composers who lived in different countries at just about exactly the same time.

Because while Handel’s biblical oratorios were all the rage in London, Bach was doing something very similar in Liepzig—churning out his vast output of Church cantatas. So even though they didn’t actually ever meet face to face, it’s a safe assumption they were keeping pretty good tabs on each other.

This week on Choral Concert Nick Halley will bring you a whole slate of composers that had a healthy influence on Bach, including the great Handel, Johan Eckhard and Marc Antoine Charpentier.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9078819567971234203.post-91711119837995220212014-01-24T18:13:00.003-04:002014-01-24T18:13:54.295-04:002014 World Choral Symposium-—Seoul

Over time though, his music has become more associated with the tried and true—and has in turn become part of the musical establishment of our time.

Well move over musical establishment and bring in John Eliot Gardiner. He is breathing life back into Beethoven, and playing it the way it was first heard. Gardiner is blowing off the cobwebs of any normal interpretation of the great master, giving all his musicians the same instruments that were used in Beethoven’s time (without the bells and whistles we have nowadays) and letting them loose to express the joy of the original sound of this incredible music.

Tune in this Sunday to hear Beethoven’s revolutionary music played with punch, in John Eliot Gardiner’s performance of Beethoven’s “Missa Solemnis”.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9078819567971234203.post-60586394582362288342014-01-23T15:19:00.006-04:002014-01-23T15:19:44.387-04:00Chor Leoni Announces New Website

Vancouver’s Chor Leoni Men’s Choir and Artistic Director Erick Lichte are pleased to announce a completely revised website, chorleoni.org. Built by Vancouver’s Raised Eyebrow Web Studio, the choir’s new site is built on the Wordpress platform and sports a clean, modern look. Mobile responsiveness was a major consideration, and the new chorleoni.org easily scales for viewing on everything from smartphones and tablets to desktop computers.

The site showcases Chor Leoni’s music with extensive use of video throughout, and is built to encourage social media sharing and interaction. A new system of online reviews for CDs, events, and blog posts also includes audience interaction, as once a review has been submitted other readers are welcome to rate its usefulness on a scale of one to five.

Chor Leoni’s musical products include CDs, digital download cards, and iTunes-only releases. These are beautifully showcased alongside integrated sample tracks in a new Music Store, which is searchable by category, seasonal offerings, and genre.

“Chor Leoni is proud to have a website that seeks to communicate with our audience with the same clarity as our singing, “ says Artistic Director Erick Lichte. “We hope that this new site will help us connect with many more people around the world and help us spread the love and joy of choral singing.”

Listen to music, watch videos, purchase tickets for an upcoming performance, read press releases or blog posts, submit a review, or browse the music store: Experience chorleoni.org!

We know that 500 years ago, people weren’t talking the way they do now (not even the funniest accent in England is really approaching it), but how DID they talk?

Well the great tenor Charles Daniels has wondered just that and thought about it a lot. He’s come up with some great performances that do sound pretty funny—just a little bit like a cross between a Scottish bard and a Monty Pythonesque cockney crooner. But it is done so brilliantly, it just makes you want to dance.

You'll hear Charles tackle Orlando Gibbon's "This is the record of John" along with a lot more choral music that is sure to lift your winter-worn spirits.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9078819567971234203.post-3468552562163667682014-01-15T15:12:00.004-04:002014-01-15T15:14:00.316-04:00Reminder - NewWorks Deadline February 17th

Just over one month remains until the entry deadline for our 5th annual, national choral composition competition, NewWorks.

The purpose of the NewWorks competition is to foster new and engaging choral works by Canadian composers. The DaCapo Chamber Choir was founded in 1998 and is dedicated to exploring unaccompanied music, primarily of the 20th Century and later. We are continually looking for new pieces to perform which will challenge us and our audiences - both musically and emotionally. In the past number of years we have premiered a number of exciting works discovered through the NewWorks competition, most recently This Evening of our Life by Matthew Emery (a 2011 NewWorks submission).

For this year's competition, all entries must highlight a Canadian text. The winning entry will receive a $1,500 cash award plus travel expenses to Kitchener to attend the premiere of his/her composition by the DaCapo Chamber Choir, under director Leonard Enns, in the choir’s 2013/2014 season. We are also inviting young composers (aged 25 and younger) to submit compositions for consideration in our Young Composers Reading Sessions. Entry deadline is February 17th, 2014.
So much great choral music is inspired by religious words, but if you look a little deeper, there is also a lot of wonderful choral music that uses secular texts.

Ok - what is “secular” music? Well, maybe it’s easier to say what it isn’t. It’s choral music that uses texts that do not come from a religious tradition, so if your text is from the Bible, the Koran, the Hebrew scriptures or the Tibetan book of the dead, well – you aren’t secular.

There are TONS of secular themes to choose from and one of the finest is nature. And on this Sunday’s Choral Concert you will hear some beautiful songs about nature – about the sea, about natural hot springs, about spring, about the beautiful Irish air, and even one about the mapping of the planetary cosmos.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9078819567971234203.post-91643349206462347592014-01-09T15:14:00.004-04:002014-01-09T15:14:55.850-04:00Student Chapter Deadlines for Podium Extended! We've extended the application deadlines for everyone applying to present at the ACCC Student Chapter Poster Session at Podium 2014 conference in Halifax.

If you're interested in applying to conduct in one of two public Conducting Master Classes with Dr. Hilary Apfelstadt and the National Youth Choir, we've extended your application deadline as well!

Materials for both events are due on 3 February 2014. The Vancouver Chamber Choir is holding auditions for professional-level singers. All voices (SATB) are invited.

The Vancouver Chamber Choir is a fully professional choir of 20 experienced, well-trained singers. The key activities of the Choir include a subscription series that is unique in Vancouver, extensive touring in Canada and abroad, broadcasting live concerts, recording, commissioning and premiering new choral compositions, and presenting four to five educational programs throughout each season.
The Choir demands a major commitment of time and needs to be the singers' top priority.

The Vancouver Chamber Choir usually rehearses on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday mornings.
A list of substitute singers is maintained; these people may also be used to augment the Choir if a larger group is needed.

An audition lasts approximately one half hour and singers will be required to sing three or four pieces in different styles and languages. There will also be an interview with Jon Washburn. A formal résumé is required. Singers are expected to provide their own accompanist for the audition.
