On Saturday, September 25th the Association of Canadian Choral Communities and the Nova Scotia Choral Federation will present “TUNE UP! SING OUT!” a day of workshops to help Nova Scotians find their singing voices. Open to anyone interested in singing in choirs as well as experienced choristers, it will be a day of learning and fun.
There will be music and learning for everyone. Singers will benefit from workshops in vocal technique, reading music, and rehearsals that will allow them to learn and perform pieces all in one day. Conductors can participate in masterclasses led by nationally known clinicians who will help them lead their choirs with skill. Educators will be treated to renowned pedagogues presenting workshops on the Kodaly Methodology and the use of Folk Music in the classroom.
There will also be an important advocacy training workshop for arts administrators and conductors. Throughout the day, a Choir Expo will feature information about many Nova Scotian choirs so new singers can find a group to join.
The guest clinicians for the event come to us from across the country. All are accomplished choral practitioners and many are also Board members of the Association of Canadian Choral Communities. They include Ki Adams (NF), June Countryman (PEI), Debra Cairns (AB), Andree Dagenais (MB) and Willi Zwozdesky (BC).
The final event of the day is a “Big Sing Out!”, a free public event in conjunction with Halifax’s Culture Days. Beginning at 4:30pm, the lawn of the Halifax Public Library (corner Spring Garden Rd. and Brunswick St.) will be full of people of all ages, ranges and abilities raising their voices together. All are welcome to join in the music-making. Song sheets will be provided.
All workshops take place Saturday, September 25th at the Dalhousie Arts Centre. For the day’s schedule and registration details please visit www.nscf.ns.ca or www.choralcanada.org.
About the NSCF: Since 1976 the Nova Scotia Choral Federation has offered programs and services to support and encourage the development and enjoyment of choral music throughout the province. Much of the Federation’s work is aimed at providing Nova Scotia’s youth with opportunities to acquire a skill that will be a life-long source of joy and accomplishment. Providing excellent technical expertise and training, we encourage high standards of artistic achievement. In this way the Federation is investing in the future cultural resources of our communities. The Nova Scotia Choral Federation is grateful to the Cultural Division of Nova Scotia Tourism, Culture, and Heritage for their continued support.
About ACCC: Founded in 1980, the Association of Canadian Choral Communities (ACCC) is Canada's only national service organization for choral practitioners. With 38,000 members from coast to coast to coast, ACCC is a strong national voice for conductors, singers, composers, academics, publishers, and choral administrators. ACCC’s key activities and services include the National Youth Choir of Canada, the country’s only National Choral Competition (in partnership with CBC and the Canada Council), a biennial national conference, and a national composers’ competition. ACCC promotes choral music at all levels throughout Canada, and supports and encourages the writing and performance of Canadian choral music.
