FESTIVAL 500 and Memorial University Choral Institute 2011 * July 5 - 14, 2011 *

Festival 500 and The Phenomenon of Singing International Symposium VIII, St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, is offering an opportunity to obtain Graduate Credit for participation in one of three graduate courses: Choral Conducting Seminar, Vocal/Choral Pedagogy, or, Singing Traditions and Practices.
* These dates pertain to the on-site campus portion of the Choral Institute courses.
* Courses actually take place during the FULL Spring semester (May 9 - August 5, 2011) via an online D2L distance education site.
* Festival 500: July 6-13, 2011; The Phenomenon of Singing International Symposium: July 10-13, 2011

Choral Institute Courses:
Students may register for ONE of the following three Institute courses:

Education 6914 or Music 6800 - Choral Conducting Seminar
This course focuses on the art, skill and pedagogy relating to choral conducting. It includes attendance at relevant festival and symposium presentations, workshops, rehearsals and concerts in addition to both onsite seminars and additional course requirements. (3 credits)
Option:    Enrolment for choral conducting master class as participant - limited to 6 conductors.

Education 6915 or Music 6801 - Vocal/Choral Pedagogy

This course focuses on performance practices, methodologies, strategies and research relating to vocal and choral pedagogy. It includes attendance at relevant festival and symposium presentations, workshops, rehearsals and concerts in addition to both onsite seminars and additional course requirements (3 credits)
Option:    Enrolment for voice master class as participant - limited to 6 singers.

Education 6919 or Music 7801 - Singing Traditions and PracticesThis course focuses on singing traditions and practices (e.g., cultural, pedagogical, stylistic, historical) with a sub-focus pertaining to the focus of Festival 500 – the power of song. It includes attendance at relevant festival and symposium presentations, workshops, rehearsals and concerts in addition to both onsite seminars and additional course requirements (3 credits)

REGISTRATION PROCEDURES*
* To register for a Choral Institute graduate course, you must register with Memorial University AND Festival 500.
* Registration for Memorial University Spring semester begins April 15, 2011
* Once registered for a course, students will receive additional information and course materials re. accessing the online D2L website.

Step 1:     To register for a graduate course at Memorial University:

OPTION A: Students who are currently enrolled in a MUN graduate degree program: If this course is part of an approved program as an open elective, proceed with normal course registration; no per course fee applies.

OPTION B: Students who are not currently enrolled in a MUN graduate degree program: Complete an application “Application for Undergraduate Application for Admission or Re-Admission”. This form is for general MUN admission, i.e., outside a specific degree program. If you are registering under an Education course number, contact Tina Hunt for course admittance form. If you are registering for a Music course number, contact the School of Music general office (contact information below).
       
            Application or Re-Activation Fee            $40.00
            Per Course Fee (Graduate)                     $255.00
                                                             Total     $295.00

Step 2:     To register as a student delegate for Festival 500 and The Phenomenon of Singing International Symposium VIII: *

* Students must register BEFORE May 9, 2011 (when course begins).

           Graduate Student Participation Fee        $305.00*

*This fee includes registration for BOTH Festival 500 as a ‘Come Solo’ Delegate and The Phenomenon of Singing International Symposium VIII as a student delegate. Registration includes access to all festival workshops, rehearsals and master classes, opportunity to sing in Adult Project and/or Come Solo Festival Choir, access to all Symposium sessions and cameo performances, several receptions and concerts etc. See website for details relating to registration packages and/or contact Mrs. Janet Miller (see contact information below).
