This new recital series, designed by OCS Artistic Director Jordan de Souza to compliment the Main Choral Series, will feature both rising stars and celebrated vocal artists in an exploration of the human voice. The inaugural recital on October 15 at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church will feature two of the hottest young talents on today's Canadian classical music scene, bass-baritone Philippe Sly and pianist Jordan de Souza, in an intimate evening of musical conversation and glorious treasurers for the voice.

CHORAL CONCERT, with host Peter Togni Sunday, September 2, 2012 9:00 - 11:00 am, (9:30 - 11:30 NT) on CBC Radio 2
Old Music, New Music and nothing in between
This week on Choral Concert Peter Togni will bring us some of the earliest choral works known, but he will also bring us some 20th century choral classics. It’s either old or new, but nothing in between.
There’s a wonderful similarity between these two worlds, as if for many composers the complexity of the music of the 18th and 19th century just disappeared in the 20th, and the celebration of simplicity became the common ground between the old and the new. From the music of Hildegard von Bingen, the earliest known composer of western music to the contemporary sounds of Jan Garbareck and his improvising saxophone, choral concert will span one thousand years in a few moments.
You will also hear the music of Josquin Des Pres, Ralph Vaughn Williams, Thomas Tallis and Carl Orff.
Don’t forget that CBCMUSIC.CA has lots to offer for classical music lovers, there are 10 classical streams, available 24 / 7. You can also check out the Choral Concert blog plus extensive videos and concerts in all genres.

CHORAL CONCERT, with host Peter Togni Sunday, August 26, 2012 9:00 - 11:00 am, (9:30 - 11:30 NT) on CBC Radio 2
Music from the USA
This week on Choral Concert Peter Togni will bring us music from the USA.
With the international prevalence of composers like Eric Whitacre, Philip Glass and Samuel Barber, the distinct beauty of American music has touched the world. It’s a sound that could be described as settled, but somehow not content. There is an edge in that glorious beauty that somehow reflects a nation still defining its artistic voice to the rest of the world.
You will hear the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and Chorus, the Choir of New College Oxford, the Vancouver Chamber Choir, and the Los Angeles Master Choral and Orchestra.

Ottawa Choral Society Names New Artistic Team
Following an extensive search, OCS President Jim Howse recently announced that Montreal-based Jordan de Souza has been named Conductor and Artistic Director of the Ottawa Choral Society and Kevin Reeves, Resident Chorus Master. Howse said, “ We are delighted to have two such outstanding choral musicians leading the choir. The board is extremely pleased to have been able to attract Mr. de Souza who, at twenty-four, is already in great demand and is on a fast track to becoming one of Canada’s most visionary and exciting music directors. At the same time, we are very happy to be continuing the important long-term relationship the choir has developed with Mr. Reeves whose skill in choral training has proven invaluable to the choir in past seasons.” From Edmonton, where he is currently preparing Ariadne auf Naxos, Mr. de Souza said, “It is an honour to be appointed the new leader of the OCS as successor to Matthew Larkin, and it is with great pleasure that I begin my term, alongside Kevin Reeves, this fall: eager to continue and develop the tradition that has long distinguished this outstanding organization. I look forward to getting to know each of the Society's members personally and to engaging with the choir’s patrons. Together we will continue the evolution that keeps the OCS relevant, thriving, and bold in its endeavours.”

Music from Northern Lands
This week on Choral Concert Peter Togni will take us to the cool, spacious world of the north.
There is a wonderful and mysterious quality in the music that comes from cultures that live with the cold and dark for many months of the year, and then celebrate the bright and intense light of the brief summer.
Northern countries, including Canada, all have very strong choral traditions. Perhaps it is because singing together brings warmth, light and hope.
You will hear music from Finland, Norway, Estonia, Russia and of course – Canada. Choirs will include the Helsinki University Chorus, the Elora Festival Singers, the Quintessential Vocal Ensemble, the Swedish Chamber Choir, and the Chorovaya Akademia.
