Great choral music with an Elizabethan bent
On Choral Concert this Sunday Nick Halley brings you the music of Orlando Gibbons, along with some composers from our time that were inspired by him.
Now here’s something you might not think about every day—what did this music actually sound like, sung in the English of that time? We know that 500 years ago, people weren’t talking the way they do now (not even the funniest accent in England is really approaching it), but how DID they talk?
Well the great tenor Charles Daniels has wondered just that and thought about it a lot. He’s come up with some great performances that do sound pretty funny—just a little bit like a cross between a Scottish bard and a Monty Pythonesque cockney crooner. But it is done so brilliantly, it just makes you want to dance.
You'll hear Charles tackle Orlando Gibbon's "This is the record of John" along with a lot more choral music that is sure to lift your winter-worn spirits.
