Noel Edison to lead 3rd annual TMC Choral Conductors’ Symposium January 22-26, 2013 in Toronto

The Toronto Mendelssohn Choir is now accepting applicants for the 3rd annual TMC Choral Conductors’ Symposium.  The TMC created this national symposium in 2011 as part of its Emerging Conductors Program to bring together emerging choral conductors with acclaimed conductor Noel Edison and two internationally recognized choirs. During the symposium participating conductors work intensively with Noel Edison and the choirs to expand their own choral conducting skills.  In 2013 the five-day Toronto-based symposium will take place from January 22 through 26.

Participating conductors will not only refine their skills in workshops with Noel Edison, but will be given the rare opportunity to conduct the 70-voice Mendelssohn Singers and the chamber-sized Elora Festival Singers.  Working with these two ensembles of experienced and skilled singers will present the conductors with the opportunity to experiment with their own conducting styles and musical interpretation. Five conductors will be accepted into the program. There will also be opportunities for others to participate as observers. The deadline for conductors to submit their application to participate is November 12, 2012.  Details, including the registration form, are available on the TMC Choral Conductors’ Symposium web page.

Giants of the Baroque – Bach and Handel

This week on Choral Concert Peter Togni brings us two great composers that defined the baroque era: Bach and Handel.

These two giants were both born in 1685, and with Bach’s intensity, poetry and deep intelligence contrasted by Handel’s grandiose, but direct and immediate passion the two men offer a comprehensive panorama of one the greatest periods in musical history.

You will hear highlights from Handel’s oratorio Israel in Egypt in a live concert with the BBC singers, plus a sneak peak of Tafelmusik’s upcoming release of the Messiah.

From J.S. Bach you will hear his famous cantata Wachet Auf  with the Bach choir of Bethlehem, and Sheep May Safely Graze with the Elmer Iseler Singers.

Don’t forget that CBCMUSIC.CA has lots to offer for classical music lovers, there are 10 classical streams, available 24 / 7. You can also check out the Choral Concert blog plus extensive videos and concerts in all genres.

New Releases and the “Diabolus in Musica”

This week on Choral Concert Peter Togni brings us a full slate of new releases, everything from the latest offerings from The Sixteen to a wonderful new CD by the French group Diabolus in Musica, who dedicate themselves to the performance of medieval choral music.

Diabolus in Musica named themselves after the medieval dictum that a specific musical interval, the tritone (or diminished fifth) is not to be sung under any circumstances. It was considered the “Devil’s Interval” and inspired evil thoughts….

In this edition of Choral Concert you will actually hear Peter Togni sing a tritone on air, and you can judge for yourself whether or not it deserves such a diminished characterization. Nevertheless, I assure you he will survive unscathed  and will go on to bring us some incredible music performed by Diabolus in Musica - a collection dedicated to the great musical master Johannes Ockeghem.

Don’t forget that CBCMUSIC.CA has lots to offer for classical music lovers, there are 10 classical streams, available 24 / 7. You can also check out the Choral Concert blog plus extensive videos and concerts in all genres.

Choral Concert contemplates the great beyond

This week on Choral Concert Peter Togni brings us to the ultimate question, the big one, the vexing pondering of what lies beyond….  with an incredible performance of Mozart’s Requiem.

Whatever you think happens to us in the hereafter, the contemplation of this profound question has led to the creation of some of the greatest music in the western choral tradition.

In this edition of Choral Concert you will hear everything from our feature piece of Mozart’s Requiem performed by the Latvian State Chorus and the Latvian National Symphony, the Elmer Iseler Singers singing motets by Maurice Durufle, to the great Hubert Parry’s “I Was Glad” performed by the Vancouver Bach Choir.
