CHORAL CONCERT, with host Nick Halley Sunday, February 9, 2014: 9:05 - 10:00 am, (9:35 - 10:30 NT) on CBC Radio 2

Why you might owe a lot to William Byrd.

Do you, or does someone you know have anything patented, some sort of copyright, something you've written or an image that's been put to use?

If so, you owe a lot to the British composer William Byrd.

Back in the 16th century William Byrd was one of the first composers to have his music printed, and in doing so the Queen gave him the right to be the ONLY one who could authorize the printing of his music. It was the first "copyright" for music, and we owe it to Byrd for being the first to get the intellectual property rights ball rolling.

This week on Choral Concert Nick Halley will bring you lots of music by the great master William Byrd, along with a feast of choral sounds are both sweet and savoury. everything from J.S. Bach to the French mystic Olivier Messiaen.

And don't forget, you can stream choral music 24/7 at the CBC Music choral stream.  cbcmusic.ca/choralconcert
