The Toronto Mendelssohn Choir’s vision is to make choral masterworks available, accessible, and inspirational to all listeners. Through performances and educational programs, the TMC plays an important role in the choral community in Toronto, in Ontario and in North America.
For the 2011/12 season artistic director Noel Edison has chosen major symphonic works that haven’t been performed in Toronto for a number of years. Performances will bring together the 150-voice Toronto Mendelssohn Choir, the Festival Orchestra (TMC’s longstanding professional orchestra) and noted soloists. Highlights include A Night of Brahms featuring Ein Deutsches Requiem in the fall and Walton’s Belshazzar’s Feast in the spring, both at Koerner Hall. Popular annual traditions complete the season: Festival of Carols at Yorkminster Park Baptist Church, this year welcoming Richard Ouzounian as narrator; Handel’s Messiah with the TSO; and Sacred Music for a Sacred Space on Good Friday at St. Paul’s Basilica. The TMC will also perform regularly with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, including the June 2012 performances of Mahler’s massive Symphony #8, known as “The Symphony of a Thousand.” The full TMC concert season is outlined below.

Pacifica Singers Auditions May 31
The Pacifica Singers will hold auditions for new members on the evening of Tuesday, May 31.
The Pacifica Singers are a select ensemble of 16-18 voices led by award-winning conductor John William Trotter, Assistant Conductor of the Vancouver Chamber Choir. The ensemble was established in 2009 to provide a performance venue for experienced and motivated choral singers whose goal is to make music
at a very high level. In providing direct exposure to the world of professional music making, it offers an experience of exceptional value for singers intending to make music their career. Current members are drawn from throughout the lower mainland with many also serving as conductors, music educators,
and/or professional singers in their communities.
The Pacifica Singers will perform in four concerts with the Vancouver Chamber Choir in the course of the 2011-2012 season, in addition to an independent production.
Most rehearsals are held on Tuesday evenings, with occasional Sunday rehearsals and additional dress rehearsals as required.

Young Composers Competition Winners
The competition finalists came from all over North America and were selected from 71 pieces submitted. The judges were composer Larry Nickel, conductor John William Trotter and Vancouver Chamber Choir Conductor and Artistic Director Jon Washburn. Each piece was performed by the Vancouver Chamber Choir prior to winner announcements.

There is a magic about Lady Cove. The 50 voice strong all women’s choir from St John’s floats on a sea of community support that propels them into a remarkably high standard of choral performance. Not to mention their talented and tireless director Kelly Walsh, who directs them with talent and grace into higher and higher levels of excellence. In this concert they teamed up with a trio of great percussionists: Bev Johnston, Bill Brennan, and Rob Power to create a concert called “Rhythm Song” .
You’ll also hear new CDs from the Elora Festival Singers, and the Netherlands chamber choir.

Bach Month peaks with an Easter Tradition – The B Minor Mass
Johann Sebastian Bach is considered by many to be the greatest composer of all time in the western classical music tradition. So in honour of his incredible output the month of April is all Bach on Choral Concert.
This Sunday the month climaxes with a Choral Concert Easter Sunday tradition: a performance of J.S. Bach’s great Mass in B minor with the Tafelmusik Chamber Choir and Baroque Orchestra conducted by Ivars Taurins.
The late, great broadcaster, writer and critic Ken Winters said after attending this concert that “the music of this supreme Mass and its performance were simply out of this world”.
The B minor Mass is considered by many critics and scholars as one of the greatest masterpieces of western civilization. It certainly is the culmination of a lifetime of extraordinary work by one of our most respected composers, and this week’s performance is truly extraordinary and not to be missed.

Next Sunday Peter Togni will continue the Choral Concert tradition of bringing you a world class performance of J.S. Bach’s great B Minor Mass. This year’s edition will feature the Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra and Chorus.
However, this week we will bring you the equally great St John Passion. In Christianity, the passion story, or the story of Christ’s crucifixion, is commemorated on the Sunday before Easter as “Palm Sunday”.
You’ll hear a truly stunning performance of Bach’s St John Passion from Montreal - with ensemble Arion and Les Voix Baroque led by Alexander Weimann.
