Ukrainian Choral Conductors' Seminar Edmonton Alberta August 9 - 18, 2013

Inviting church and community choirs!

This year, the Ukrainian Music Society of Alberta, founded in 1972, and incorporated in 1980, is celebrating its 40th anniversary. Over the years one of their major projects has been the Choral Conductors’ Seminar in Edmonton (1979-1997), with participants from Canada, the United States, Australia, Argentina, Italy, and Ukraine.

This August 10–18, 2013, UMSA is organizing a continuation of this important work – a choral conductors’ seminar, at St. John’s Institute, Edmonton. The main instructors will be Maestro Laurence Ewashko of Ottawa, with the help of local talent, and Prof. Mstyslav Yurchenko, of Kyiv, a specialist in liturgical tradition, especially that of Maksym Berezovsky. Ukrainian choral music will be the main focus however the lectures will be offered in both languages and texts will be transliterated.

Proposed topics are: vocal technique, conducting techniques, cantoring, score analysis, text delivery and diction, secrets of running a rehearsal efficiently, history of Ukrainian choral music and conducting church choirs.

The cost for registered participants will be $375. Local singers-volunteers will be invited to form the seminar choir.

Bach  Month concludes with his Magnificat

Johann Sebastian Bach is considered by many to be the greatest composer of all time in the western classical music tradition. So in honour of his incredible output the month of April has been all Bach on Choral Concert.

This Sunday Peter Togni will present his favourite Bach pieces including Studio Musique Ancienne de Montreal in a truly beautiful concert performance of the Bach Magnificat, often performed at Christmas but it sounds wonderful at any time of year.

The Halifax Summer Choral Conducting Symposium exists to bring quality summer choral conducting instruction to the Maritimes. Designed for music educators and professionals of all levels, this four-day intensive workshop offers practical instruction in choral and vocal pedagogy, conducting technique, choral repertoire, and rehearsal technique. The 2013 HSCCS faculty brings a breadth of experience to the programme. INTERNATIONAL PRIZES "CATALUNYA" FOR CHORAL COMPOSITIONS 2013

Promoting creativity in Catalan choir music has been one of the priorities of the choirs in our country. In 1996 FCEC took the initiative to convene the International Prizes "Catalonia" for Choral Compositions. Already four editions have been realized: 1996, 2002, 2006 and 2008.
Now the Catalan Federation of Choirs organizes the fifth edition in 2013.

The main purposes are:

• To encourage the creation of choral works based on poems and literary texts in the Catalan language.
• To encourage the creation of new harmonization on the extensive repertoire of traditional songs of Catalan countries.
• To facilitate the renovation and upgrade of the choral repertoire with these new songs, to be performed by as many choirs as possible.
• To promote the Catalan music literature and to release the richness of our traditional repertoire all over the world.

Vancouver Chamber Choir - Young Composers' Competition Results

The Vancouver Chamber Choir and Artistic Director Jon Washburn have drawn their 42nd concert season to a close with the performance of YOUTH AND MUSIC and winner announcements of the 2013 Young Composers' Competition.
  
The Vancouver Chamber Choir gives outstanding support to the growth and development of talented young musicians. This year's competition finalists came from across North America and were selected from 61 pieces submitted worldwide. The judges were composer Larry Nickel, conductor Kevin Zakresky and Vancouver Chamber Choir Conductor and Artistic Director Jon Washburn. Each 1st and 2nd Prize piece was performed by the Vancouver Chamber Choir prior to winner announcements.

Toronto Mendelssohn Choir Associate Conductor job posting

Le Choeur d’été de Montréal est à la recherche de choristes qui ont le désir de poursuivre leurs activités chorales tout au long de l’été et qui ont à coeur d’atteindre leurs objectifs visant à améliorer leurs capacités vocales et musicales.

Le Choeur d'été de Montréal est un tout nouveau projet qui a pris naissance à l'été 2011 et qui a pour objectif de réunir les amoureux du chant choral classique de l'île de Montréal et des environs. Ce jeune choeur a pour mission d’organiser la tenue d’un concert consacré aux grandes oeuvres pour choeur et orchestre.

Pour la saison 2013, nous célébrerons le 200ème anniversaire de naissance du compositeur italien Giuseppe Verdi. Au programme de cette année, la célèbre Messa da Requiem.

Auditions: Vancouver Chamber Choir - Saturday, June 1, 2013

The Vancouver Chamber Choir is holding auditions for professional-level singers. All voices (SATB) are invited.

The Vancouver Chamber Choir is a fully professional choir of 20 experienced, well-trained singers. The key activities of the Choir include a subscription series that is unique in Vancouver, extensive touring in Canada and abroad, broadcasting live concerts on the CBC, recording, commissioning and premiering new choral compositions, and presenting four to five educational programs throughout each season. The Choir demands a major commitment of time and needs to be the singers' top priority.

The Vancouver Chamber Choir usually rehearses on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday mornings. A list of substitute singers is maintained; these people may also be used to augment the Choir if a larger group is needed.

An audition lasts approximately one half hour and singers will be required to sing three or four pieces in different styles and languages; there will also be an interview with Jon Washburn. A formal résumé is required.

Singers are expected to provide their own accompanist for the audition.

Bach  month continues with a morning of his great cantatas

This Sunday Peter Togni will bring you a collection of Bach’s cantatas. A cantata comes from the Italian word cantare which literally means “to sing”, and you will hear great singing on this program – everyone from John Elliot Gardner’s Monteverdi Choir and Concentus Musicas Wien through the Ottawa Bach Choir singing some of  the master’s greatest sacred cantatas.
