Hear Verdi’s Requiem with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and the Toronto Mendelssohn Choir on CBC Radio 2, 9:00 - 11:00 am (9:30 - 11:30 NT).
Peter Togni will also continue his count down to the National Competition for Canadian Amateur Choirs. now sponsored by the Association of Canadian Choral Communities. The finalists in all 12 categories have been announced and we are highlighting as many as we can. This week we’ll hear the University of Guelph Chamber Singers, who are finalists in the Mixed University category.
Even though it isn’t an opera at all, Guiseppe Verdi’s Requiem is often called his greatest opera. That’s because it’s big, grand, dramatic, and powerful and hardly seems like it should be performed as part of a church service, not to mention that it sounds in many places just like one of his operas.
Nevertheless, in spite of Verdi's classics like Aida and Rigoletto, the Requiem is truly his greatest work. You’ll hear it in a stunning performance with Toronto Symphony Orchestra and the Toronto Mendelssohn Choir conducted by Gianandrea Noseda.
