Malaysian Choral Eisteddfod 2010 – Top Prize goes to Canada

June 22, 2010—The Canadian choir "Le Collège Vocal de Laval" emerged victorious from the 8th Malaysian Choral Eisteddfod 2010. A top score of 25.1 points and the accompanying Golden Diploma were enough to see the choir, directed by Gregory Charles, take first place. All in all, a total of 500 participants from 6 countries took part in the competition, in the categories “Children’s and Youth Choirs” and “Folklore.”

The second place choir was from Malaysia. The “MIA Ladies Chorus” picked up one of the coveted Golden Diplomas and chalked up a score of 23.43 points. The 8th Malaysian Choral Eisteddfod 2010 was held in the Malaysian capital, Kuala Lumpur, from 31 May to 7 June 2010.
For the first time, this year’s event was organized by INTERKULTUR Germany in cooperation with the Young Choral Academy, Malaysia. INTERKULTUR has been supporting the event as a sponsor since 2007. The following year saw the introduction of the tried-and-tested MUSICA MUNDI evaluation system. This year’s choir competition, encounter concerts and workshops all went down well with the participants. The competition performances and workshops were held at the Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Center, one of the city’s most famous cultural centers.

All told, the jury members, who hailed from China, Indonesia, Croatia, Malaysia and the Philippines, awarded a total of 8 Golden and 4 Silver Diplomas. Winning a Golden Diploma automatically qualifies a choir for the Champions Competitions at the World Choir Games or the World Choir Championships.

INTERKULTUR has ties to 120,000 choirs made up of 4.8 million choral singers around the world. In the twenty years since it was established, more than 5,000 choirs and some 230,000 singers from 100 nations have taken part in the World Choir Games and INTERKULTUR's regional choir competitions. The World Choir Games (WCG), which are dedicated to the founding Olympic ideal, take place every two years on a different continent. The next WCG will be held in 2010 in Shaoxing, China.
